Greetings all!

Yesterday, my new chickies gave me a great present. My first egg. Now this has been a very long process, and I have to say, getting this gift was quite exciting!

I was calling and texting everyone, I got an egg! Which as you can imagine got quite a few comical responses.

I started my journey to self sufficiency about a year ago. I took on a second job to pay off bills, and to get the extra money to buy fence posts, fencing etc. It has been a long and exhausting year, but seeing the fruits of my labor makes it worth it.

My chicken coop was finished about three weeks ago, and this past Sunday a friend called and said she had some older hens for me, if I wanted them, so my chicken farming has begun!

I was raised on a farm as a child, and I was always the one to gather the eggs, but I guess until I had my own chickens, I never realized how satisfying it was to get them.

It is very rewarding to reach in the nest and gather the eggs, knowing you have breakfast for the next morning. But it also brings us closer to nature, and to ourselves.

It was fun to post to my friends that I had finished my chores for the day, and many have begun calling me a farmer-ette!

Whatever the term, I am glad I chose to live a simpler life, and I am hoping in some small way to help others to create the life they want and deserve.

In a way, the age old question of which came first, the chicken or the egg has a meaning for those of us searching, and striving to build a better life, which came first, the simple life, or the peace?

Did we develop a peaceful attitude in the beginning as we made the decision to change our lives, or did it come after we began that way of life? Or was it a process that just kind of crept up on us.

Maybe we will never know, but for now, I think I will go make myself breakfast for supper, and I know exactly where I will get the egg!

  2. An egg is but a days work for a chicken, but a bacon & egg breakfast requires total commitment from the pig
